By signing this pledge, you promise not to give your child a smartphone until at least the end of 8th grade as long as at least 10 families total from your child’s grade and school pledge. If you would like your child to have a basic phone that just calls and texts, you still can sign the pledge! The basic phone avoids many of the distractions and dangers of the smartphone.
Once 10 families have pledged from your child’s grade, you will be notified that the pledge is activated! Wait Until 8th will email you and the other parents who have signed from your child’s grade to connect you with each other. You will receive a list of families delaying from your child’s grade and parent emails to connect your group. This helps you to support one another. There is strength in numbers!
TIPS FOR SIGNING THE PLEDGE
On the pledge form, it is very important to enter the city and the state of your child’s school. Verify how the city is listed on the school’s website before you sign the pledge. The school lookup function on the form is based on the school’s mailing address. If you enter the incorrect city, your child’s school will not appear in the school search.
Since pledges are organized by schools, it is very important to identify the correct school in our database when filling out the pledge form.
If you cannot find your child’s school or next school, there is a place on the form to enter the school’s name. Please be as specific as possible here and avoid any acronyms. A volunteer on our end will match your pledge to the correct school in our system. If we do not have your child’s school in our system, we will add the school to our database. This typically takes 3 to 5 business days.
On the pledge form, we ask for your child’s current school and next school. Please enter the current school your child attends and please list the next school your child will attend such as an upper elementary school, intermediate school, junior high school, or middle school. If you child is already in middle school, please just enter the middle school name for current and future school. If you do not know your child’s future school, please manually enter TBD.
Please sign up each of your children in elementary school or middle school. To add another child to a pledge form, please select “add another student” on the form.
To sign the pledge, your child must be in at least kindergarten. Please do not sign the pledge yet if your child is only in preschool. We will not be able to connect your pledge to other families in your community if you enter a preschool.
Wait Until 8th is only taking pledges from the United States.
Please note you only sign the pledge once. There is no need to sign every school year. Our system will age the pledge up by a grade on July 1st every year.
Only one parent needs to sign the pledge. If both parents sign, this will create duplicate pledges.
Once you sign the pledge, you will be notified by Wait Until 8th once the pledge is active. This requires 10 families signing from the same grade and school. If you are joining an active pledge, updates to these groups are sent via email on Thursdays.
Final reminder- be sure to enter the correct city and state of your child’s school!

We seek to protect this information by maintaining electronic security measures and safeguards designed to protect personal information within our organization. When you enter the information on the pledge form, it is stored in our pledge data management system through Sales Force known in the industry for its security.
We are the sole owners of the information collected on this site. We will not sell or rent this information to anyone. We will not share your information with any third party outside of our organization. Your information will not be made public on this website. If your child’s pledge does become active (10 or more pledges for your child’s grade), Wait Until 8th will notify you. You will receive via email a list of families who are waiting from your child’s grade along with each other’s names and emails to connect you with each other. This helps you to support one another. There is strength in numbers!
